New Architecture for South Congress...

Just saw this story in the Statesman:

Looks like all of our favorite South Congress businesses are going to have a new neighbor soon. Plans are in the works to convert that old South Congress Baptist parking lot (where Hey! Cupcake is) to a 90-room hotel with retail, restaurants, a pool and lots of underground parking. Don't worry, Hey! Cupcake's not going anywhere, they're building the development around the business!

The project's architect will be Dick Clark and the co-owner (the mastermind of this new venture) is Bill Gurasich, co-owner of the Mansion at Judges' Hill boutique hotel. Oh my.

What do you think of all of this? Is this good news for South Congress? Let me know!

It's great for South Congress. It gives people a reason to head to the East side of the street (which hopefully will lead to more commercial development on that side of the street). Plus I'm glad to see that they're keeping the cupcake business as a way to ensure a commercial draw. I've never understood why new construction wouldn't want to try to incorporate existing businesses as a way to draw in customers to new businesses.

It's also nice that the hotel will have retail. As nice as Hotel San Jose and Austin Motel are, they create interruptions in a nice stroll-able shopping and eating district.

Good opinions, Tim. I agree that I love they are keeping the cupcake, in it's original airstream, no doubt! I never thought about how San Jose and Austin motel interupt the stream of retail shopping before, but you are right!

I am finding it difficult to say whether it is the post so great or the comments collection here. Any ways thanks for sharing such a lovely post...

Doesn't look new to me. I see this architecture everywhere now. And they all look and feel lifeless once the construction crew leaves.

Different strokes for different folks. I'd rather not see another "tuscan" or faux-crafstman style building.
